Appalachian  Critters

Butterflies

Great Spangled Fritillary

Speyeria cybele

I ask you, what could possibly go better together than a Spangled Fritillary and a blooming Butterfly Bush? Just like peas and carrots...

Tiger Swallowtail

Papilio glaucas

This is from an area along the Appalachian Trail I call "Butterfly Ridge." It's about a mile south of Beauty Spot where the trail takes a 90-degree turn while heading up the ridge, and there is a large section of sparse hardwoods full of flowering plants in Spring and early Summer. Round about July the area is full of Joe-Pie Weed, and subsequently, Swallowtail butterflies.
