Smokey  Mountain  Flora

Orange Flowers

Black-Eyed Susan

Rudbeckia hirta

An under-rated flower, as far as I am concerned. To me their warm yellow-to-orange blooms signal the height of summer. Picture at left was taken June 26, 2011. I was able to wait for a whispy cloud to go past, which made the lighting softer and more pleasant. The "height of summer" can otherwise have harsh, contrasy lighting...

This shot was taken on the 4th of July, 2010. Both were photographed where the power lines cross the Appalachian Trail, about a mile North of Indian Grave Gap. The field-like area under the lines is a treaure-trove of flowering plants.

Flame Azalea

Rhododendron calendulaceum

A shrub, but they look like modest-size trees. I've seen them at several spots along the Appalachian Trail, but these were photographed at Rock Creek Park, TN. There is a large Azalea "shrub" right alongside the parking area before the camping entrance.

Maryland Golden Aster

Chrysopsis mariana

Redstar

Ipomoea coccinea

Trumpet Vines

Campsis radicans

Turks Cap Lily

Lilium superbum

Yellow-fringed Orchid

Platanthera Ciliaris
